CBSE New Curriculum 2026-27: Three-Language Formula, Two-Level Maths & Science, AI, and More — Everything Parents & Schools Need to Know.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially rolled out a landmark curriculum overhaul that will reshape how millions of students across India study — starting from the 2026-27 academic session. If your child is currently in Class 5, 8, or heading into Class 9 this year, these changes affect you directly. At Bhavishya CBSE Consultant, we have broken down every key update so you can plan your child’s academic journey with complete confidence.

CBSE New Curriculum 2026-27

What Is Changing in CBSE from 2026-27?

The new CBSE curriculum is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE 2023). The changes are being introduced in phases and cover languages, mathematics, science, technology, arts, and vocational education.

If you are a school administrator looking to ensure your institution is compliant with these new norms, our CBSE Affiliation Services can guide you through every step of the process.

1. Three-Language Formula Mandatory from Class 6

One of the most significant shifts is the introduction of a three-language framework starting from Class 6 in the 2026-27 academic year.

Language subjects are now organised into three levels:

  • R1 – The student’s primary language
  • R2 – A second, different language
  • R3 – A third compulsory language (newly mandatory from Class 6)

At least two of these three languages must be Indian languages, as per NCF recommendations. CBSE currently offers Hindi, English, and 42 other languages — including all scheduled languages in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, plus regional and foreign language options.

R3 textbooks will be introduced in Class 6 this academic session. The full three-language formula will be operational up to Class 10 by 2030-31, with the first complete board exams under this scheme expected in 2031.

What about students returning from abroad? CBSE has provided that students coming back from foreign schools may be exempted from R3 under specific approved norms, as long as they study the total required number of subjects.

2. Two-Level System in Mathematics and Science for Class 9

This is the most academically impactful change for students entering Class 9 in 2026-27. CBSE is replacing the existing Basic/Standard Mathematics system with a two-tier structure for both Mathematics and Science.

Component Details
Standard Level Mandatory for all students — 80-mark exam, 3 hours
Advanced Level Optional — 25-mark separate paper, 1 hour

Key points:

  • Every student must appear for the Standard exam.
  • Students aiming for deeper mastery can opt for the Advanced paper in Maths, Science, or both.
  • The Advanced paper tests higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and deeper conceptual understanding.
  • Advanced marks will not be added to the overall aggregate — instead, students scoring 50% or above will have this qualification reflected separately on their mark sheet, which can be a strong differentiator for competitive college admissions.

The first Class 10 board exams under this two-level system will be held in 2028.

3. Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence — Now Compulsory

CBSE is introducing Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT & AI) as compulsory subjects for Classes 9 and 10.

  • In 2026-27, these will be introduced as internal assessment modules.
  • From 2027-28, the subject will be more formally structured.
  • By 2029, CT & AI becomes a compulsory board exam subject for Class 10.

These subjects are already being introduced in Classes 3 to 8 in the current session, building a strong foundation of digital and analytical thinking from early on.

4. Art, Physical Education & Vocational Education — Now Mandatory

Three additional areas are being made compulsory for Classes 9 and 10:

  • Art Education
  • Physical Education
  • Vocational Education

New textbooks are being introduced for Art and Physical Education. School-based assessments for these subjects begin in the current academic session, while Vocational Education board exams start from 2027-28.

If your school needs help setting up infrastructure, resources, or curriculum frameworks to support these new mandatory subjects, our New School Setup and School Improvement services are designed to help you get there.

5. New Social Science Textbooks

Social Science will feature updated, freshly written textbooks aligned with NCFSE 2023, reflecting a modern, India-focused perspective across history, geography, civics, and economics.
